Medial Epicondyle Fractures
Figure 1: Medial epicondyle fracture with elbow dislocationThe medial epicondyle is a growth centre in the pediatric elbow. Fractures through the medial epicondyle tend to occur in elementary-school aged children and early adolescents. A substantial portion of these injuries are associated with elbow dislocation (Figure 1).
Fractures that are not shifted or minimally shifted are often treated with immobilization in a cast. Medial epicondyle fractures that are shifted significantly or those associated with elbow dislocation require re-positioning of the fracture and stabilization with hardware to achieve healing.
